 The Vorontsov (Vorontsov-Dashkov) Genealogy

The Counts Vorontsov are descended from an ancient noble family which had flourished in Russia for more than seven hundred years and which was founded by Simon Afrikanovich after his departure from Germany for Kiev. Both he and his son, Georgii, gained the particular affection of the Grand Princes Yaroslav Vladimirovich and Vsevolod. His descendants called themselves Vorontsov, and of their family, Simon Ivanovich Vorontsov, a great-grandson of the aforementioned Georgii, distinguished himself during the rule of the Grand Prince Ivan Danilovich, Protasii Fyodorovich, and during the rule of the Grand Prince Ivan Vasilievich. Their descendants were recognised for their service to the Russian Throne were granted the rank of Boyar and other distinguished ranks. This is confirmed in the diploma granted by the Holy Roman Emperor Francis on January 19, 1760 to the Counts Vorontsov by which they were raised to the rank of Count. On April 5, 1797 by command of Emperor Paul I the family of the Counts Vorontsov was entered into the roll of the families of Counts of the Russian Empire.

During the reign of Peter III of Russia, Vorontsov was the most powerful man in Russia, as his niece became the Emperor's mistress. Empress Catherine, alarmed by Peter's plans to divorce her and marry Vorontsova, deposed her husband, with a great help from her bosom friend, Ekaterina Vorontsova, the wife of Prince Dashkov. Ekaterina's brothers Alexander and Semyon Romanovich were both notable diplomats, and the latter's son Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov was a prominent general who led the Russian invasion of Caucasus and colonisation of New Russia. The Vorontsovs from this branch were inveterate Anglophiles and entertained many English servants, painters, and architects.

Having no children, the last Prince Dashkov, son of Ekaterina Vorontsova-Dashkova, assumed responsibility for his cousin, Ivan Illarionovich who was born shortly before his father's death. He bequeathed his vast possessions and the Dashkov surname to him and, on the creation in 1799 of the Russian Grand Priory by Emperor Paul I, Grand Master of the Order of St John, he erected a Family Commandery which he endowed on Ivan Illarionovich, then a minor.

The Vorontsov-Dashkov surname has been used by his descendants since that time.
